Meet Cathy Malo
When Cathy Malo was faced with losing her job because her employer was going to close up shop, she had a decision to make. Instead of accepting the idea of unemployment, she decided to go into business for herself. She created Bird on a Wire Media and More from the ground up, from concept stage to tracking down suppliers to opening a brand new store in 2009.
Not only does she face the challenges that are common to all small town business owners, but she also must contend with a constantly-changing technology market. To this point, she notes that her business has been well-received and she has even been able to increase her staff since she first opened.
Cathy is an ardent supporter of the community that has embraced her and her business. She’s quick to donate to local schools, organizations and special events. She also supports the Children’s Hospital and the Canadian Cancer Society. Although her work keeps her busy, she enjoys camping in the summer and going for long drives in her beloved sports car when she is able to.
Professional. Exceptional. Wired.
Vanderhoof residents have been getting wired at Bird on a Wire Media and More since 2009. Owner, Cathy Malo, entered the business with long-term goals and a dream to become a first-choice destination among locals for all things computer and cellular-related.
Her business has grown steadily since she first opened, allowing her to hire more staff and expand her product lines. She plans to introduce the latest in Apple products soon. In addition to computers, cell phones and accessories, Bird on a Wire also carries a range of office supplies and is the main supplier for a number of other local businesses. Cathy has learned first-hand some of the challenges that small town business owners’ experience, but she has also seen how supportive and loyal the people are in the community. Cathy believes that the people in the community contribute to sustaining local small businesses.
