Meet Valena Vuohijoki
Valena Vuohijoki took her gift for arts and crafts and her business sense and turned it into a one-of-a-kind business. Goat River Folk Art is one of Vanderhoof's most unique shops, and every item it sells is hand-made or refurbished and up-cycled. The talented Valena does much of the work herself, and all other items are crafted by local artisans.
Valena is a mom of four and jokes that spare time is very rare. When she's not accompanying her children to their various activities she can usually be found working on some new item. Giving a piece or a household item a second life, she says, always gives her a special thrill.
Valena admits that she could simply sell her works online but she deliberately chose to open a brick-and-mortar store because of the personal contact it affords, something that you just can't get by running an online business. She loves chatting with people, many of whom are repeat visitors and regular fans. She especially loves seeing the joy and delight in people's eyes when they see what's inside the shop, especially when they exclaim, "I never knew all this was here!"
